Item Overview

Description

KLEINER, Salomon (1703-1761). Augsburg: heirs of Jeremie Wolff, 1731-1740. 10 parts, engraved throughout, 10 section titles in French and German, dedication leaf, emblematic dedication plate, 90 engraved plates (10 folding), all after Kleiner (repaired tears to three of the folding plates, first title creased and with small marginal repair, some light spotting and old light staining). [Bound with:] Salomon KLEINER. Representation des Animaux de la Menagerie de S.A.S. Francois de Savoye et de Piemont... une partie du Palais de Sa.dt.A.S. situé dans le faubourg de Vienne. Augsburg: heirs of Jeremie Wolff, 1734. Engraved throughout, title and 12 plates after Kleiner (plate numbered 9 torn and repaired.) Two works in one volume, oblong 2° (325 x 520mm), contemporary half marbled sheep, spine in four compartments with raised bands, the bands with a gilt roll tool above and below, repeat decoration to each compartment of a large centrally-placed fleur-de-lys tool (slight scuffing to extremities). Provenance: Maria Ludovica Borromeo Arese and her husband Massimiliano Favia del Core (armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITIONS of this magnificent record of the palaces and residences of Prince Eugene of Savoy in and near Vienna with a charming supplementary work describing his menagerie. The superb plates delineate the work of the architect J.L. von Hildbrand, the interiors of Claude le Fort du Plessy and others, and the gardens and fountains of Dominique Girard. Throughout the scenes are enlivened by numerous elegantly dressed figures, promenading or in conversation. The scarce supplementary suite shows the exotic animals of Prince Eugene's menagerie, established at the Belvedere in 1716 on the model of that at Versailles. Berlin Kat. 2117 (both works); cf. Lipperheide Dc20 (?both works, but, in error, lists second work as part 'XI' of the first work); Nissen ZBI 2212 (second work only).
