Item Overview

Description

Kim Weiland, watercolor, New Orleans, plantation style home, image area 15" x 22".....Biography from Coleman Fine ArtDouglas Kimbel Weiland was born September 1, 1953 to Douglas James and Constance Bevan Weiland on an American military base in Nuremberg, Germany. Upon completion of active duty, the family relocated to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where with his brother, Thomas, he spent the remainder of his childhood. The desire to paint surfaced at an early age but living in rural Chester County Pennsylvania allowed little in the way of instruction. Parental support and encouragement led to private study with local artist and sculptor Anthony Trezza, and further painting instruction in with Pat Witt, a South Jersey painter. Weiland entered Tyler College of Art in September of 1972. The influences of a painting department that included artists: John Moore, Stephen Greene, Margo Margolis, and Charles Leclair, prepared the way for further study abroad. In 1975, Weiland moved to Italy, studying one year at The Tyler School in Rome. At this point, travel became an obsession. Sketches and paintings reflect time spent throughout Italy, Northern Europe, Yugoslavia and Tunisia. After graduating from Tyler with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art, Weiland relocated to Ocean City, New Jersey. Here, the serene influences of the coast soon found a stronghold in his style and the works from this period concentrate almost exclusively in watercolor. The transparent qualities of the medium responded well to the study of color and light as Weiland began to record the ever-changing image of the coast. This series of paintings evolved and coincided with extensive study in the styles and works of Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and Andrew Wyeth.Today, Weiland lives with his family in Ocean City, NJ in a worn 107-year-old Second Empire that has somehow held together all this time; leaning and groaning through the wind. The artist's studio consumes the third floor of their home where Weiland continues to work.
