The subjects of Kim's oil pastel painting range from the little experiences of everyday life to somber themes from Korean history. Kim is concerned with representation in a social and cultural context. Here, a boy attendant (donja) with a spray of flowers rides an ox before a backdrop of Korean Buddhist sutra verses.

Kim Myonghi was born in Seoul in 1949, graduated from the College of Art, Seoul National University, in 1972, and received her MA at Seoul National University. She attended Pratt Institute, New York in 1976. Since her first one-person exhibition at Goethe Institute, Seoul, in 1972, she has had five one-person exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions. In 2003 she had a one-person exhibition at the Hyundai Gallery, Seoul. Kim works in an abandoned schoolhouse in Naepyungli, a tiny village near the DMZ and the city of Chuncheon in Gangwon Province, South Korea.
