Item Overview

Description

KILLIAN, Hans. Facies Dolorosa: Das Schmerzensreiche Antlitz. [The Face of Pain.] Leipzig: Georg Thieme, 1934. 4° (281 x 220mm). 64 black and white photographs. Original black cloth, front cover gilt-ruled, spine and front cover titled in gilt, original pale blue dust-jacket printed in black (jacket toned, spotted and soiled, some small chips and tears at the extremities); with a second plain dust-jacket of cream paper (spine lightly browned, spine end chipped and short tears along the edges repaired with tape on the verso).

FIRST EDITION, IN THE RARE DUST-JACKET together with a plain dust-jacket underneath it, this one probably original or contemporary. This plain jacket may predate the production of the printed jacket which may have been made to help market the book to a more general audience. 'A haunting and memorable book', which 'resonates with a disturbing and powerful beauty. A work of photographic science has undoubtedly crossed the border into photographic art' (The Photobook). The Photobook, vol. II, pp.136-7.
