Kiki Lamers' paintings are based on photographs; the artist initially painted self portraits, naked, uncompromisingly depicting her entire body, in intimate situations where she stares directly at the viewer. Lamers went on to paint intimate portraits of vulnerable children; viewers are unable to evade their limpid, penetrating gazes. The children are depicted in different contexts, always utterly devoid of any lure of seduction. Lamers' manner of painting – fragile pink hues on a leaden grey background, in oils with a matt aluminium pigment – seems to engage solely with the exterior. She avoids an inherent sentimentality in the subject matter; uneasiness arises from the juxtaposition of perceived innocence and implied awareness.

Kiki Lamers was resident artist at the Rijksakademie in 1990-1992.
She won the Koninklijke Subsidie voor Vrije Schilderkunst (NL) in 1990 and the Jordaan- Van Heek Prize (NL) in 2009.
