Item Overview

Description

KEN OHARA
One. Tokyo: Tsukiji Shokan, 1970.

Quarto (268 x 220 mm). 500 black and white photographs. Publisher's printed return card laid-in. Original photo-illustrated card covers; original photo-illustrated dust-jacket (very light wear); cloth folding box.

Gelatin silver print (245 x 198 mm), signed and inscribed in pencil on the verso, laid-in.

FIRST EDITION, WITH A SIGNED GELATIN SILVER PRINT OF THE COVER-IMAGE, the first in the series, which is also reproduced on the front of the dust-jacket. Initially deeply disorienting, "these photos deny the individuality of their subjects to make a wider social observation... Ohara has taken the utopian step of using the camera to turn humankind into one big melting pot, his serial photographs making almost ritual atonement for the sin of racism". (The Photobook). A VERY GOOD COPY. The Open Book, pp.266-67; The Photobook, vol. I, p.291. (2)
