Red Rum is the only horse to have won the Grand National three times. Ridden by Brian Fletcher, he achieved his first Grand National victory in a record time of just under ten minutes in 1973, setting a benchmark which would stand for sixteen years. In 1974 with Brian Fletcher in the saddle again Red Rum became the first winner of back-to-back Grand Nationals since Reynoldstown in 1936. His third National win came in 1977.

Ginger McCain, Red Rum's trainer had a fourth Grand National success in 2004 with Amberleigh House. Ridden by Graham Lee, Amberleigh House claimed the Aintree honours 27 years after Red Rum's last victory.
