Notes

Literature: Frances K. Smith, Kathleen Moir Morris, Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen's University, Kingston, 1983. Barbara Meadowcroft, Painting Friends: The Beaver Hall Women Painters, Montreal, 1999. Note: Morris never ventured far afield. For subject matter she stayed close to the two cities she knew, Montreal and Quebec. In fact, Quebec City was the farthest point of travel according to Frances Smith. Paintings with Quebec subject matter appear in exhibitions as early as 1925. The Seminary of Quebec was founded on March 26, 1663 by Francois de Laval, first Bishop of Quebec. The Seminary has devoted itself to the service of parishioners and to the formation of future priests. This lot is most likely the work exhibited in a solo exhibition at the Art Association of Montreal in October, 1939, no.29.
