Karl Julius Heinrich Yens (German-American 1868 - 1945) Born in Altona, Germany on Jan. 11, 1868, Karl Yens (nÚ Jens) studied with Max Koch in Berlin and with Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris. He was active as a muralist inGermany and Edinburgh, Scotland before moving to Southern California in the U.S. in 1901. He was active in Los Angeles and Pasadena before moving to Laguna Beach in 1918. He was a founding member of the California Water Color Society. His studiostill stands on South Coast Highway. A versatile painter, his oeuvre includes portraits, still lifes, landscapes, genre subjects, and many studio figure studies. Equally facile with oil and watercolor, his work is distinguished by its bold, colorful, and decorative style. This mixed media watercolor is 'Music Of Color', painted on well prepared artist board. It depicts a colorful view of the blue waters of Laguna Beach, California. It won the bronze medal at theprestigious "Painters Of The West" exhibition in 1926. There are 4 original period exhibition labels affixed on verso. The painting is matted and framed, measuring 23 x 29 inches. Condition is excellent.
