Kanemura captures in this photograph of a typical back street the chaotic urbanism of Tokyo. Filling the frame of his medium-format camera with a dense collage of buildings, telephone wires, and signage for bars, pawnshops and adult entertainment, he records the material essence of the city. The large circular signboard in the foreground advertises a telephone dating club; its handwritten sign reads '100 you can talk with a girl!' Kanemura, the recipient of Japan's prestigious Domon Ken Award in 2000, has exhibited his works internationally, including New Photography 12 at MoMA, New York (1996), and The History of Japanese Photography at MFAH (2003).

AP1 aside from the sold-out edition of 5.
