Item Overview

Description

K-Hito (pseudonym for Ricardo Garcia Lopez, 1890 - 1984), Spanish school
Pastel and coloured chalks
Head portraits of two stylised, hooded figures, with elongated angular faces
signed lower middle, K Hito
19" x 13 ½"
Provenance: This painting came from Southern Spain. The artist was part of the 'Generation of 27', an influential circle of people in Spain between 1923 and 1927 who shared a common interest in Avant-garde forms of art. Under his pseudonym he worked as a caricaturist but after lampooning certain groups he reverted to using his real name at the time of the Spanish Civil War during which he was professor of calligraphy in Valencia. The portraits show influences of the artist's era such as those of cubism and the elongated face forms that are reminiscent of Modigliani. The images have a certain Peruvian resonance and may be drawn from studies of S American peoples with whom the Spanish have long been associated.
