Julius von Blaas (Albano1845-1922 Bad Hall) "Styrian Horse Market", signed and dated Jul. von Blaas 1908, Oil on canvas, 70 x 130 cm, framed, (Rei) Exhibition label from the Vienna Künstlerhaus, Autumn Exhibition 1908, 2978 Cat. No. 118 attested by Dr. Wladimir Aichelburg. Julius von Blaas: Son of the Historical and Gernre painter Carl von Blaas. He grew up in Italy and was taught by his father. He studied later at the Academies in Venice, Florence and Rome. In 1873/74 he made trips to Egypt, India, China, Japan and the USA. He then settled in Paris, where he got to know Rosa Bonheur and Ernest Meissonier. In 1877 he moved to Vienna and made many portraits of the Imperial couple. Julius von Blaas was a well-loved animal portraitist of his time and from the 1970s also a Genre and Historical painter. He was forcibly influenced by Franz von Defregger, as well as his brother Eugen von Blaas, as can be seen from his use of colour.
