Description

A nude in profile to the right, his right arm raised signed 'IS' pen and brown ink, watermark Fortuna 161/4 x 111/4 in. (414 x 284 mm.) PROVENANCE The artist's studio, by descent to Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld, the artist's grandson and director of the Schlossmuseum, Berlin, by whom placed for safekeeping on deposit at The Nationalgalerie, Berlin, removed to the U.S.S.R. in 1945; returned in 1958 to The Nationalgalerie, Berlin, their stamp (not in Lugt), by whom transferred to the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, until 2000, (with the Berlin release stamp 'Frei gegeben, SMPK', not in Lugt), and returned to The descendants of the artist. NOTES Dr. Stephan Seeliger dates the sheet to circa 1820. The figure is closely comparable in handling to a Seated nude turning to the right, seen from behind in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (inv. no. Bernhard and P. Kipphoff, Deutsche Romantik Handzeichnungen, Munich, 1974, II, p. 1727, illustrated.
