Notes

A student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Léon Bonnat, Delance-Feurgard was known for her compositions of women in gardens, painted with expressive brushwork and luminous colors. As works like In the Garden demonstrates, Delance-Feurgard was likely influenced by the French Impressionists who also exhibited at Durand-Ruel's galleries. Her painting was selected to represent France at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. Most recently, In the Garden was hung among the fascinating objects in the Chelsea, London home of "Time Lord" Severin Wunderman; the man behind the Gucci watch brand and Swiss luxury watch manufacturer, Corum.
