"T.D. from JULIAN SCOTT 1892" in pencil on the stretcher, with a label from F. Weber & Co., Philadelphia, affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 28 3/4 x 21 in. (73.0 x 53.3 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, minor retouch, craquelure, surface grime.

Provenance: Joseph Valentino Toschi, JV Fine Arts Gallery, San Francisco; private Illinois collection, c. 1960s.

N.B. Robert J. Titterton, author of Julian Scott: Artist of the Civil War and Native America has suggested that the work may be dedicated to Colonel Thomas Corwin Donaldson (1843-1898), who was chief of the Indian Statistics for the 11th Census of the United States, 1890, and had corresponded with Scott in 1892 regarding the purchase of another painting.

Condition Report

The lining is adhered with glue or resin. There is retouch along the upper and lower edges of the work, as well as in the highlights of the water and at the edge of the Union soldier's face. There are additional thin glazes of retouch. The craquelure is stable.
