Provenance

The Collection of Mr. Ho Chinam

A wholesale supplier of dyes, Mr. Ho Chinam (1908-1953)was an avid connoisseur of the arts and resided on Queens Road Central above his shop. He enjoyed gathering friends together to discuss topics that revolved around art and culture. Later friends recalled that Ho loved most of all to immerse himself in his study and examine his paintings and other objects, gaining much satisfaction in the process.
This selection of Mr. Hos paintings encompasses both classical and modern works, purchased between the 30s and 50s. It includes the works of prominent Lingnan artists Gao Jianfu, Gao Qifeng and Chen Shuren. Ho had close links with the artists in Hong Kong due to his close proximity and passionate interest, and he often invited artists and connoisseurs to get together for gatherings.
Zhang Daqians Young Lady from Bhutan, created in 1950 when he was in India, and Zhao Shaoangs Flower and Birds and Calligraphy in Cursive Script are dedicated to Mr. Ho, with Cats and Magpies by Xu Beihong, are among Mr. Hos prized possessions, which are currently being offered for the first time. This collection was treasured and kept by Mr. Hos family members for nearly sixty years after he passed away at the young age of 45.
