This bronze depicts the moment Hercules releases the arrow from his bow aimed at the Stymphalian bird. Uphues also produced a pendant bronze depicting Hercules victorious, with the deceased bird in his left hand. For an example of this version sold at auction see Christies, London, 27 July 2010 lot 249 sold £4375.

Joseph Uphues studied under R. Begas at the Berlin Academy, and won a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. He produced numerous public monuments in Berlin.
