Literature: Harold A.E.Day, 'The Life and Work of Joseph Stannard', 1965, no.40 entitled "Rough seapiece" and described as "A most spirited picture painted in beautiful silvery tones. The brown sail towards the centre of the picture proves to be a splendid focal point, whilst the silvery grey sky and denote much movement. A fine work"
