Item Overview

Description

[THEATRE] JOSEPH JEFFERSON (1829-1905) American actor/manager of the 19th century, known especially for for his comic portrayals, popular and successful both in America and abroad. Jefferson made his greatest success in the part of Rip Van Winkle (first performed in 1859). So loved and identified was he in this role, that Jefferson performed the part almost exclusively after 1865. Instead of resenting being "typecast," Jefferson milked the part for all it was worth. A fine 4pp. ALS, 5" x 8" (folded sheet), undated, sent to a Mr. Morse, signed J. Jefferson, with excellent content: "... You are very kind to take the trouble of writing me such an agreeable note. I have done scarcely anything to the part you have lately read so if you experienced any novel sensations it comes from the difference in type... your praise is doubly cheering coming as it does from one standing so high in the great republic of literature..." Folds, very minor ink blur and soiling, otherwise very good. NOTE: a few strands of hair have become affixed to p.4-- Jefferson's hair? his wig? [near top of page, white hair].
