PROVENANCE

Château de Grand Vaux.

NOTE

This painting hung in the Grand Salon in the Château de Grand-Vaux situated just outside Paris (see Provenance below) and is depicted in a watercolor by Paul Thomas (see Fig. 1) that was reproduced by J. Buorguignon, "Le Château de Grand-Vaux", in L'Illustration, no. 4523, September 11, 1929, p.529.

The château belonged to Pierre Vigier (1760-1817) who, after the Revolution, became the director of the Société des Bains Publics in Paris and amassed a small fortune. With his new found wealth, he was able to purchase the château and the surrounding lands.
