Item Overview

Description

JORGE HERNANDEZ
Varadero.
Seeing as the resort town of Varadero is also called Playa Azul meaning "blue beach" in Spanish it's most apropos that it's impossible to tell where the sky begins and the land and sea end in this staggeringly layered Hernandez creation. Situated on the Hicacos Peninsula, some eighty-seven miles east of Havana, at the eastern end of the Via Blanca highway, Varadero is one of the largest resorts in the Caribbean, boasting more than twelve miles of white sand beaches. Hotels began to appear in the 1950s, and after the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the beach's many mansions were expropriated from their rich owners. Today, Varadero is primarily visited by European and Canadian tourists, and the number of American tourists visiting Varadero is on the rise despite the restrictions that prevent its citizens from flying directly from the U.S. to Cuba. Unlike many other Cuban tourism centers, Cubans can visit Varadero, though their use of some hotels is restricted.
