JONATHAN SKELTON 1735-1759 THE ARCHBISHOP'S PALACE, CROYDON inscribed on fragment of the former mount: 19. Archbishops Palace att (sic) Croydon / J.Skelton 1754 watercolour over pencil heightened with touches of bodycolour, on laid paper 14 by 21.5 cm; 5½ by 8½ in.

Notes

Skelton was a frequent visitor to Croydon where his main patron Archbishop William Herring lived. Other views of Croydon and the Palace, dating to 1754 and 1755, are in the Croydon Public Library. His works are rarely to be found on the market and in particular in such fine condition as the present work.
