Notes

JOHN YOUNG (1786-1828)
(LOTS 218-223)

It is believed that John Young of Southampton travelled to Jersey in 1811 but several pictures of Channel Island subjects seemed to have been painted at around the dates of 1812 to 1815 by artists signing themselves 'I', 'J' and 'T' Young which has lead to confusion as to the correct identification of the artist. At this time a 'J' or 'I' Young began to paint oil panoramas of Jersey. These are fine landscapes typically with exposed rocks, characteristic foliage and blasted oak shaped like a Y believed to be symbolising Young. These in the past have been traditionally attributed to Tobias Young (1755-1825) but are now in fact thought to be by John Young who is known to have been in Jersey between 1812 and 1815. In 1815 four of John's drawings were engraved and used to illustrate William Plees account of his tour of the island in Island of Jersey. In 1816 John Young moved to St Peter Port, Guernsey where he lived until his death in 1828.

Of the present group of works by Young, four are signed 'J. Young' and five are dated 1815.
VAT rate of 5% is payable on hammer price and at 17.5% on the buyer's premium.
