"John Young courts the dangers nd pleasures of making this type of art. The air-brushed, matt surfaces of his paintings offer the perfect threshold. Through a surface that is both lucid and detached, we encounter an image-world that appeals to us with pure scope pleasure. Delicate, explicit, close-up botanical images are counterpoised with austere nudes and romantic, generic landscapes laid over a super-scanned background appropriated from fourteenth century wall murals of the Buddhist Fahai Temple, south of beijing.
