Description

Oil on canvas 132 by 155 cm.; 52 by 61 in. The painting depicts the family of John Wallace (1733-1810) of Sidcup House, Kent and Golden Square, London. He is shown with his wife Elizabeth French, of Frenchland and Thorndykes, Scotland and their four eldest children. To the left stands their eldest daughter Elizabeth, beside her their second son John with his infant brother on his mother's lap, and to the right the eldest son James (1766-1829), wearing Harrow school clothes. Both James and John Wallace were educated at Harrow, James Wallace (1766-1829) continued his education at Christ's College, Cambridge, and was ordained in 1792. John Wallace (1767-1846) became a writer in the Madras Civil Service in 1790 and Commercial Resident at Ingeram from 1805 until 1808. PROVENANCE By family descent to Major R.E. Partridge of Martlesham Lodge, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, by whom sold in these rooms, 18th May 1939 (as by Zoffany); Anon. sale, Christie's, 22nd November 1968, lot 87 (as by Zoffany), bt. for 1,900 gns.
