Henry Reginald Courtenay, second son of Henry Reginald Courtenay, the fourth son of Sir William Smyth Courtenay, was born in the parish of St. James, London on 27th December, 1741. He married, in 1774, Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Thomas Howard, second Earl of Effingham. Before becoming Bishop (1797), he had been a prebendary of Rochester, rector of Lee, in Kent, and of St. George's, Hanover-square, London, and consecrated Bishop of Bristol. Contemporary accounts describe him as amiable and courteous. Dying in London on 9th June, 1803, he was buried in the cemetery of Grosvenor Chapel.
