Notes

Princess Louise Adelaide, known throughout her life as 'Mademoiselle Condé', was the second daughter and youngest child of Prince Louis of Condé, the head of a cadet branch of the Bourbon dynasty. Her nephew, Louis-Antoine-Henri de Bourbon-Condé, Duc d'Enghien, was executed at Vincennes on the orders of Napoleon in 1804 and the family line became extinct with him. According to a paper label on the reverse, the present lot was painted whilst the princess was in exile in London in 1802. John Smart junior certainly painted the sitter's father as this portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1808 (no.827), see D. Foskett, John Smart, the Man and his Miniatures, 1964, p.59.
