Description

JOHN SHERMAN (1823-1900). Secretary of the treasury (1877-81) under Hayes and secretary of state (1897-98) under McKinley, he resigned over the cabinet's decision for war with Spain. A friend of President Lincoln and brother of William Tecumseh Sherman, he was responsible for the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. War-date ANS as senator on verso of ALS, 2pp with integral leaf, 8"x10", Washington, DC, Jun 28, 1864. Quartermaster Sergeant William Anderson of Union Light Guard writes to Senator Sherman requesting his recommendation or course of action to secure a position as clerk in the Bureau of Military Justices. Sherman writes on docket panel on verso: "I know the writer of this to be a [?] soldier very competent for a clerkship & for the reasons stated deserving it. John Sherman." Darkly penned and signed beneath docket. Light general toning, darker at left fold; minor soiling; partial fold separation with no paper loss; else VG.
