Item Overview

Description

JOHN SHERMAN (1823-1900). Secretary of the treasury (1877-81) under Hayes and secretary of state (1897-98) under McKinley, he resigned over the cabinet's decision for war with Spain. A friend of President Lincoln and brother of William Tecumseh Sherman, he was responsible for the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. War-date LS as senator, 1p, 5"x8", Washington, DC, Apr 2, 1864 Sherman writes to Colonel J. Jn. Connell in Lancaster, OH, regarding a House "bill to organize a Bureau of Military Justice [that] is meeting with obstruction. [Secretary of War Edwin] Stanton is opposed to it, although Holt favors it very strongly. My present impression is that it will not pass. In case it should pass either House, you will have ample notice of it, and then I would press your application..." In fact the bill did pass on Jun 20 that year and the Bureau was created and was attached as part of the War Department as the war continued. Accompanied by original free franked postal cover postmarked that same day signed at top right margin, adding "USS." Est: $150-350
