This is a study for Spencer Stanhope's famous 'Eve Tempted', painted in 1877. Currently residing in the Manchester City Galleries, the finished work is a striking and slightly unnerving interpretation of the serpent in the Garden of Eden, whispering into Eve's ear as she stands under the Tree of Knowledge.

This lot is subject to storage and collection charges.
