Description

A rare portrait miniature by the artist portraying Charles I (1600-1649), King of England, Scotland and Ireland (1625-1649), wearing breast plate and studded pauldrons, gold collar with badge of the Order of the Garter, white chemise with van Dyke collar, his loosely curling hair falling to his shoulders.
Enamel, signed on the counter-enamel K. Charles/ after Vandyke/ JP. pinxυt, gilt-metal mount.
Oval, 62mm (2 7/16in) high
Provenance: John Poyntz Spencer, 5th Earl Spencer KG, PC (1835–1910).
