Item Overview

Description

[Old Master] Original Portrait of John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford, engraved by George Vertue (1684 _ 1756) English engraver and antiquary, whose notebooks on British art of the first half of the 18th century are a valuable source for the period. The subject of this portrait appears ion Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1; Henry IV, Part 2; Henry V; Henry VI, Part 1. Prince John first appears in 1 Henry IV where he fights for his father at the Battle of Shrewsbury. Historically, John was only fourteen at the time of the battle, but, considering that boys were put into battle at relatively young ages, it is possible that he may have at least been on the battlefield. In 2 Henry IV he is portrayed in a negative light when he dupes the Archbishop and Earl Marshal into dismissing their army, before arresting them for treason. In reality, it was the Earl of Westmorland who talked down the rebels. Bedford appears as a man who is completely loyal to his brother in Henry V and is a main figure in the government of his nephew Henry VI. As Regent of France, he returns to his area of responsibility in an attempt to subdue the rebellions there. He dies 985while sitting in a chair at Rouen, just after he hears the patriotic screams of his fellow countrymen. The last impression one is given of Bedford by Shakespeare is a fairly positive one: he is a loyal servant of the crown who gave his life for his king, cause and country. The image is approx. 11 x 7-1/4" plus margins which are only lightly foxed. Along 2 of the edges there are short tears but all are well away from the image.
