J.M. Tracy attended Oberlin College and Northwestern University, but between 1867 and 1868, studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Initially a painter of landscapes, he also exhibited a full-length portrait of his wife at the Salon of 1874. In 1881, Tracy moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, where he painted the majority of the sporting dog paintings for which he became known. He later moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
