JOHN KIPARRA TJAKAMARRA CIRCA 1931-2003 UNTITLED 1972 61 by 56 cm Synthetic polymer paint on composition board Bears No. 2 on the reverse Provenance: Painted at Papunya in 1972. The painting was acquired by the Adminsitrative Officer at Papunya through Peter Fannin. Private Collection, Canberra Cf. Travels of the Tingari Ancestors, 1972, and Men and Women, 1972, illustrated in Perkins, H. and H. Fink, Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 2000, pp.36-37 A painting associated with the esoteric Tingari Beings around the artist's country at Kulkuta and Nimangka in the western desert, a favourite theme of Pintupi painters The artist first went to Papunya in 1964 and painted with Freddy West Tjakamarra and Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi at the beginning of the Papunya painting movement in 1971.
