The present view is taken from the region of Moor Lane, and shows Lancaster Castle and Priory to the left, and St. John's Church Spire and Moor Lane Mill to the right. Behind the foreground figures may be Dalton Square, a new development of c.1800.
John Henderson was a self-taught artist and the son of a shoemaker who lived in Lancaster the greater part of his life, exhibiting at the Liverpool Academy between 1822 and 1837.
