unframed, heavy surface dirt, not examined under UV light, laid to canvas, wax lined, evidence of abrasion and loss from previous frame, evidence of inpainting and fill throughout, evidence of tears and repairs to upper right and middle left, areas of paint loss throughout, most significant in upper left corner and along left edge, approximately 1" tear in lower left corner beneath signature, scuffing to paint to area left of sitter's face and in sitter's jacket, semi-circular scratch from sitter's mouth to shoulder, possible inpainting in forehead of sitter (see images)
