Description

John Frederick Hunter OBE RUA ARCA (1893-1951) THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY, VICTORIA STREET, BELFAST exhibition label on reverse oil on board 5 by 60cm., 19.5 by 23.5in. Exhibited: 'An Exhibition of Paintings, Watercolours, Etchings, Woodcuts and Stained Glass by John F. Hunter', Emer Gallery, Belfast, 27 September to 6 October 1990, catalogue no. 67 (illustrated in catalogue) Born in Manchuria, the son of an Irish Presbyterian minister, Hunter came to Ireland as a young man and was educated at Larne, Belfast and Dublin, where he studied at Trinity College. He was part of a progressive group of artists in the north who exhibited briefly together as the Ulster Unit. During a period at the RCA in London in the early twenties he absorbed modernist influences, which were to shape his future work. In 1923 he was appointed the first Inspector of Art to the Ministry of Education in Northern Ireland. He exhibited regularly at the RUA and with the Ulster Arts Club and the Waddington Galleries, Dublin.
