Notes

Inheritress was a highly successful brown filly bred by Mr Eyres (or Ayres) in 1840 by The Saddler out of Executrix by Liverpool. She won four small races for Eyres in 1843-44, before being sold to Mr J. Meiklam for whom she recorded no less than forty-three more victories in the 1840s. Her biggest wins were the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle in 1845, and the Liverpool Cup of 1847; she also won eleven Queen's Plates. The present picture was painted in 1846 following her remarkable feat of winning fourteen races the previous year.
