Notes

John Francis Sartorius was the fourth generation of artists in the Sartorius family of sporting artists, being the son of John Nost Sartorius (1759-1828), grandson of Francis Sartorius (1734-1804), and great grandson of John Sartorius (1700-c.1780). He exhibited prolifically at the Royal Academy from 1797-1829, and published some of his work in The Sporting Magazine.
The motif of the earth stopper in the present set of pictures is based on his grandfather's portrait of Arthur Wentworth as an earth stopper, from c.1772.
Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire ('beautiful view' in Norman French), seen in this lot, is the ancestral seat of the Dukes of Rutland.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
