Notes

Charles Knight is recognised as one of the most enterprising publishers of the 19th Century. Knight made important contributions to public education and publishing techniques. He founded the Windsor and Eton Express in conjunction with his father in 1812.

He is perhaps best remembered for his association with the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge founded by Lord Brougham in 1826 and its connection with The Penny Magazine, Penny Encyclopaedia, and Library of Entertaining Knowledge, which brought reading to the masses, and was a forerunner of bookclubs and paperbacks. Knight's bust by Joseph Durham can be found in the National Portrait Gallery, London.

John Collingham Moore was brother to Albert Joseph Moore A.R.W.S. (1841-1893), whom John taught after the death of their father William Moore (1790-1851).
