Notes

By the middle of the nineteenth century, and particularly as Mount Vernon was in restoration, Americans developed an interest in the more human side of George Washington. Images of his courtship of Martha Dandridge Custis, the young widow of Daniel Parke Custis, and the couple's subsequent marriage were highly marketable. In 1860, the New York engraver, John McRae, created this scene of Washington with Martha to his right and her children, Martha Parke Custis (Patsy) and her son John Parke Custis (Jack).
