signed and dated 'J Bryan Pinxit 1832' (lower right) and signed and dated with inscription 'The likenefs of William Tremlow, of Northwich, (for a many years Surgeon to the family at Marbury,) and his Horse Bob, with the very favorite Dog Grouse, belong- ing to John Smith Barry Esq. of Marbury Hall; at whose ernst request this Picture was Painted, as a mark of sincere friendship and esteem. William Tremlow was the Surgeon for the Smith-Barry family at Marbury, Northwich, Cheshire. Marbury Hall, dates to the reign of Henry III and is the former seat of the ancient family of Merbury or Marbury. The Marbury line ended with the death of Richard Marbury in 1864. In 1708 the estate was purchased by Richard Savage, 4th Earl Rivers (1660-1712) and then inherited by his daughter Elizabeth, who married Lt. Gen. James Barry, 4th Earl of Barrymore (1667-1747) (see lot 4). After the death of Richard Barry, 7th Earl of Barrymore who died without issue, the estate passed to his cousin, James Hugh Smith-Barry (1748-1837). The picture offered here was commissioned by the illegitimate son of James Hugh Smith-Barry, John Smith-Barry (1793-1837).
John Bryan is also known to have painted another member of the Tremlow family, that of 'John Twemlow [sic] of Hatherton, Cheshire, with his favourite horse, Sultan, his groom and his Scottish terrier' in 1826, which was later engraved by J.W.Giles and published by J.Graf, 1841.
