Description

A double sided portrait of mother and son, Jane Lillie (1753-1820) and Robert Stevenson (1772-1850); she wearing white dress with lace edging, fichu, lace ruff, indoor cap with lace trim and decorated with blue feathers, gold earring and gold jewel encrusted brooch at her corsage; he seated before crimson curtain, wearing black coat, matching waistcoat, chemise with gold stick pin and tied cravat. She signed on the obverse and dated, I.B/1795 ; he signed on the obverse and dated, K.ML/ 1848 , gold frame, she with inner plaited hair border, engraved with sitters' details, set in red leather travelling case together with further portrait of a man, a blue glass bordered glazed aperture to reveal gold monogram, JL and eight monograms with hair work and seed pearls. Oval, 49mm ( 1 15/16in) and 59mm ( 2 1/4 in ) high (2)
