The first lighthouse to be sited on the Bishop Rock, said to be one of the most exposed outcrops anywhere in the world's oceans, was swept away in 1850 before it was even completed. Replaced by a more robust granite structure completed in 1858, it was greatly strengthened in the 1880s into the lighthouse familiar to modern sailors.
