Item Overview

Description

A market scene with two boys by a vegetable seller making lace, the St. Jorispoort in Dordrecht beyond signed and dated 'Y:volle Vens.A o 1668' (lower left) oil on unlined anvas 118.9 x 169.6 cm. NOTES The present lot is the only known market scene by the artist. The influence of his master, Nicolaas Maes, is clearly visible in the treatment of the figure of the vendor and the vegetable still life. The Sint-Jorispoort, or The Gate of Saint George, was named after the nearby building of the civic guards; it was demolished in 1866. A view of the gate was executed by the nineteenth-century Dordrecht artist, Johannes Rutten (1809-1884) just before its demolition (watercolour on paper, signed and dated, 380 x 310 mm. in the Stadsarchief Dordrecht, inv. no. 1155).
