Other versions by Vollevens are in the Rijksmuseum and the Instituut Collectie Nederland, both Amsterdam; and one was sold at Glerum, Amsterdam, 9 May 2004, lot 42.

As state pensionary, Gaspar Fagel was the successor of Johan de Wit who was executed because he failed to keep the invading forces of France at bay. He was distinguished for his integrity and firmness with which he repelled the ambitions of Louis XIV of France and for his zeal in supporting the claims of the Prince of Orange to the English throne.
