Johannes Oertel (D.C., 1823-1909), Landscape
oil on board, signed and dated on the verso "Johannes A. Oertel July 1907," housed in a period appropriate gilt wood frame. Johannes Adam Simon Oertel is listed in Conentino and Glassie's "The Capital Image: Painters in Washington, 1800-1915" which states that he came to Washington, DC at the invitation of Captain Montgomery C. Meigs to work on decorations for the House Chamber at the Capitol." He served for a short time in 1862 with the Army of the Potomac; later he was ordained in Lenoir, NC as an Episcopalian priest.
