Description

Nukina Kaioku (Japanese 1778-1863), set of six watercolors on paper, depicting landscapes, each inscribed and bearing seal marks, three matted and framed, three not framed, each approximately 53 1/4" X 21 1/2" each, all laid down on foam core, some stains, foxing, holes and rubbing. Nukina Kaioku was the son of a samurai serving the daimyo of Tokushima. He studied calligraphy and Kano-style painting in Tokushima, Buddhism at Koyasan and Confucianism and Chinese-style painting in Edo, finally establishing his own school on Kyoto. He is most noted as a calligrapher as well as a scholar/literati painting in the Nanga tradition.
