Item Overview

Description

A capriccio of classical ruins with figures around a fountain, a fortified city and mountainous landscape beyond oil on canvas 34 1/8 x 523/4in. (86.7 x 134 cm.) NOTES For the attribution, see the pair of capriccios sold, Christie's, Amsterdam, 6 May 1998, lot 148, which, like the present work, show the influence of Giovanni Paolo Panini on the artist. Harms' interest in ruins and perspective is shown by a series of nine engravings from 1678 and later by his activity as a stage designer in Dresden.
