Description

Extensive river landscapes with villagers and peasants at jetties oil on copper 173/8 x 231/4 in. (44.2 x 59.1 cm.) a pair (2) NOTES Originally from Bohemia, Hartmann began his career working for a nearby monastery, before becoming Court Painter to the Duke of Mansfeld in 1700. By 1702 he had moved to, and become a citizen of, Prague. There he was heavily influenced by the work of Jan Breughel I and Anton Mirou. Paintings by Hartmann were in the Imperial Collection, and those at Bamberg, Prague and Schleissheim.
